bench exercise 2013

"Furniture in its largest sense is an object which celebrates something that people do."

Richard Artschwager

This bench is meant to facilitate the gathering of people and celebrates the act of sitting together in a public space. During my final project "Bench Exercise" at the Zurich University of the Arts I took a closer look at our habits of sitting in public space. What I observed led me to create this stair—like stepped piece of furniture. The arrangement leaves room for interpretation, allowing visitors and users to do as they wish in the given space. This encourages social interaction by providing diverse ways of sitting.
